Program Note:

My Sonata for Trumpet and Piano was written for Brandon Craswell, professor of trumpet at the University of Georgia. The work is a technical tour de force in the trumpet part, featuring challenges in triple tonguing, range, and stamina. The octatonic passages of the third movement demand outstanding technical facility, while the twelve tone themes that pervade the music require an exacting ear. The piece is a true sonata- the piano part is equal to the trumpet in prominence and virtuosity. It is important to note that these technical features are not an end in themselves, but instead, a means to expressing a musical narrative.
