Program note:
Periastron is defined as the point of closest approach between the two stars in a binary star system. The title is in honor of whoever the talented performers are that may come together to perform this piece. The work is in an arch form: ABCBA. The piece contains a contemplative lyrical middle section (C), which is enclosed by two lively allegro sections (B). The whole piece is bookended by dramatic Maestoso sections (A). The harmonic strategy is based on a twelve tone row, which is present throughout the entire piece.
